LA 498: The Gothic Tradition: Literature + Art + Film + Culture
Because this was a senior level class, I encouraged students to multiclass, or, to put projects they were doing for other classes into conversation with the projects they were doing in ours. This was also a cross-temporal and cross-genre class. Some of the works that influenced this course include:
-
Barbarians: Goths (History Channel 2004)
-
Barbarians: The Savage Goths (Terry Jones 2006)
-
Black Death Plague and Art History - Medieval Era (2009) and Gothic Art History (2009) by historyofpainters.com
-
Gothic Cathedrals: Notre Dame to the National Cathedral (History Channel 1994)
-
A Bible Carved in Stone: Amiens Cathedral (2010)
-
Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, or, The Modern Prometheus (1818)
-
Documentaries on Elizabeth Bathory, Vlad the Impaler, Werewolves, Vampires, and Ghosts
-
Edgar Allan Poe, Flannery O'Connor, and the film Capote (2005)
